Coast (Mombasa, Diani, Lamu, Malindi)

A crisp, less humid feel is common in July along the coast, with steady southeast winds and daytime highs in the mid-to-high 20s°C. Lamu’s old town and the beaches see steady tourist traffic but the sea is usually calm for dhow trips and diving. Nights remain warm; light layers suffice. Hotels fill up for school holidays, so reserve places near popular beaches and islands in advance.

Central Highlands & Nairobi (Nairobi, Naivasha, Nakuru)

July stays cool and relatively dry across the central highlands; morning game drives at Maasai Mara or lakeshores are crisp and insect activity is lower. This is prime safari season because vegetation is thinner and wildlife congregates around water-book lodges early. A warm jacket is helpful before sunrise and roads are generally in good condition for road travel between Nairobi and the Rift Valley.

Rift Valley & Maasai Mara (Maasai Mara, Nakuru, Naivasha, Amboseli fringe)

July brings crisp mornings and clear skies-prime safari conditions across Maasai Mara and Nakuru with excellent visibility for spotting migratory herds. This is the peak of the wildebeest migration in many years, and river crossings can occur; expect large crowds at known crossing points. Early hot-air balloon trips run often, so reserve early and bring warm clothes for sunrise flights.

Mount Kenya & Aberdares (Nanyuki, Mount Kenya, Aberdare Range)

July stays cold at elevation with clear, stable weather ideal for summit pushes on Mount Kenya; glaciers and snowfields are easier to read in bright conditions. Day temperatures below 3,500m feel brisk and summit nights are freezing-good down clothing and technical gear are essential. This is a busy period for mountaineers so secure guides and huts well in advance.

Lake Victoria & Western Kenya (Kisumu, Homa Bay, Kakamega, Siaya)

July stays relatively dry and sunny, excellent for visits to the lakeshore communities and wetlands; daytime temperatures remain warm but not oppressive. Birdwatching peaks in clarity and roads firm up for game and cultural tourism. Mornings can be cool near reed beds; bring sun protection for daytime excursions and a sweater for breezy dusk hours.

Northern & Arid North (Marsabit, Turkana, Samburu, Isiolo)

July keeps a drier profile with excellent visibility for northern landscapes and wildlife concentrated at perennial rivers-this is one of the better months for remote safaris in Samburu and for visiting Lake Turkana. Daytime heat is still strong; early starts and late-afternoon rests are prudent. Ensure you have fuel and communications because services remain limited across the region.
