Coast (Mombasa, Diani, Lamu, Malindi)
April is the wettest month on the coast: persistent, sometimes intense showers and thunderstorms are common and the sea can be choppier, affecting ferries to the islands. Mombasa’s old town lanes and beach resorts see quieter occupancy and many lodges close for maintenance; coral visibility drops after heavy runoff. If you must travel, plan for cancellations, pack quick-drying gear and embrace the quieter beaches between showers.
Central Highlands & Nairobi (Nairobi, Naivasha, Nakuru)
April is the heart of the long rains in the highlands: persistent wet spells, saturated roads, and cool overcast days are common across Nairobi and the surrounding lakes. Boat trips on Lake Naivasha may be limited on stormy days and rural access to some lodges can be disrupted. This is low season-great for bargain hotel rates and fewer crowds, but bring good rain gear and be ready for slower travel times.
Rift Valley & Maasai Mara (Maasai Mara, Nakuru, Naivasha, Amboseli fringe)
April is typically the wettest month in the Rift; persistent downpours make the plains lush and crossings in the Mara River can become dramatic. Many smaller bush lodges reduce operations and tracks become slippery-4x4 access is essential. The advantage is green scenery and active birdlife; bring a good rain jacket and waterproof bag for camera gear if you visit now.
Mount Kenya & Aberdares (Nanyuki, Mount Kenya, Aberdare Range)
April brings frequent heavy rains across the Aberdares and Mount Kenya slopes-trekking becomes more challenging with slippery routes, swollen streams, and poor visibility above the forest line. Many climbers prefer to postpone summit attempts-trail erosion is possible and some huts reduce service. This is low season for trekking prices but not recommended for inexperienced groups.
Lake Victoria & Western Kenya (Kisumu, Homa Bay, Kakamega, Siaya)
April is one of the wettest months around Lake Victoria-persistent showers and thunder are common, and swampy paths and ferry schedules can be disrupted. Wildlife hides in thicker cover and birding is excellent but slippery; many lodges offer reduced rates but access may be limited. Pack robust rainwear, secure waterproofing for electronics and expect delays on unpaved roads.
Northern & Arid North (Marsabit, Turkana, Samburu, Isiolo)
April sees the long rains hit some northern foothills with short, heavy downpours that can transform dusty tracks into impassable mud and produce sudden flash floods. Remote camps in Marsabit and near Samburu can be cut off for short periods; waterholes refill and ephemeral rivers run. Travel with experienced operators, carry waterproof gear and expect temporary delays on rough roads.
