High / low are average daily temperatures (°C). “Feels” reflects how hot or cold it feels, allowing for humidity.

Coast (Mombasa, Diani, Lamu, Malindi)

Sea-swollen humidity makes mornings feel close and heavy along Mombasa and Diani; daytime highs sit around 28-32°C with warm nights. January is one of the driest months, so beaches are firm and snorkel visibility is good around Wasini and the reefs. Expect lively tourist crowds and busy ferries to Lamu-pack light cotton, strong sunblock and a hat. Evenings bring a warm breeze and plenty of beachside dining options.

Central Highlands & Nairobi (Nairobi, Naivasha, Nakuru)

Early mornings in January are cool in Nairobi, often around 14-16°C, while afternoons warm to the low 25s°C under bright sun. This is a dry, comfortable month for exploring the Nairobi National Park, the city’s markets, or day trips to Naivasha where water levels are pleasant for boat trips. Nights get crisp so a light sweater is useful; dust can build on unpaved drives in drier countryside.

Rift Valley & Maasai Mara (Maasai Mara, Nakuru, Naivasha, Amboseli fringe)

Dry, dusty conditions dominate January across the Maasai Mara and Nakuru, with short grass and easy game-viewing as wildlife spreads out. Daytime temperatures climb into the high 20s°C and dawns are brisk-ideal for classic early-morning safari drives and hot-air ballooning. Roads are firm and accessible; this is a popular month so book lodges and transport in advance, especially in the Mara.

Mount Kenya & Aberdares (Nanyuki, Mount Kenya, Aberdare Range)

Clear, cool air in January makes Mount Kenya’s lower trails dry and straightforward while alpine nights remain very cold near the peaks. Day temperatures around Nanyuki are mild (15-20°C), but summit attempts still require cold-weather layers and technical equipment for higher altitudes. Wildflower meadows begin to show colour at lower levels and lodges in the forest belt are busy with climbers.

Lake Victoria & Western Kenya (Kisumu, Homa Bay, Kakamega, Siaya)

Warm, muggy mornings are typical in January with daytime temperatures around the mid-20s°C and gentle breezes off Lake Victoria providing relief. Recreational boating on the lake is pleasant, and Kisumu’s lakeside promenades are active; inland rainforests like Kakamega remain humid but largely drier than the rainy months. Mosquito protection is advisable in evenings and plan inland travel for early mornings to avoid heat.

Northern & Arid North (Marsabit, Turkana, Samburu, Isiolo)

January is very hot and dry across Turkana and Isiolo, with daytime thermometers often in the mid-30s°C and parched landscapes stretching to the horizon. Occasional dust storms can reduce visibility and make travel uncomfortable; water is scarce so plan logistics carefully. This is a practical time for overland expeditions because tracks are passable, but bring ample water, sun protection and established guides.
