Kediet ej Jill is an iron-ore massif in the Tiris Zemmour region of northern Mauritania and is the country’s highest point at roughly 915 metres above sea level.
The site is primarily an industrial landscape dominated by iron ore extraction and associated infrastructure; large ore deposits have been worked for decades and the area is characterised by open-pit and surface mining together with rail links to the coast.
Commercial mining intensified in the mid 20th century and has been the central economic activity around the nearby town of Zouérat. The geology of the massif is iron-rich and the mountain functions as the focal point for Mauritania’s major iron mining operations.
Geographically the massif overlooks the town of Zouérat in northern Mauritania and lies within the Sahara’s arid plateaus, forming a locally prominent landmark in a generally flat region.

How to Get to Kediet ej Jill

The usual way to reach the site is from Zouérat by taxi or local vehicle on mining and local roads within a few kilometres of the town; the Mauritania Railway serves Zouérat for ore transport (passenger travel on the line is limited).
