Kataragama is a small pilgrimage town in southeast Sri Lanka accessible by road from regional airports and main cities. The nearest airport is Mattala Rajapaksa International Airport (HRI); most international arrivals use Bandaranaike International Airport (CMB) in Colombo and continue by bus, taxi or private transfer.
Mattala Rajapaksa International Airport (HRI): Mattala is the closest international airport - taxis to Kataragama take roughly 1-1.5 hours depending on traffic; expect a private taxi fare of approximately LKR 4,000-6,000. There are occasional shared minibuses from Mattala/Hambantota towards Kataragama; schedules are irregular.
Bandaranaike International Airport (CMB): Colombo’s main airport is the international gateway for most visitors. From CMB you can take an airport transfer or taxi to Colombo city then a long-distance bus to Kataragama (4-6 hours) or hire a direct taxi (roughly 4-5 hours by road; private fares will be substantially higher than local buses).
