Kataragama Temple

Kataragama Temple is a prominent multi-faith shrine in the town of Kataragama in southeastern Sri Lanka, revered by Buddhists, Hindus and indigenous devotees. It is one of the island’s most important pilgrimage centres.

The site has ancient roots in Sri Lanka’s religious landscape and has been a focus of devotion to a warrior deity identified with Skanda or Murugan in Hindu tradition and Kataragama deviyo in local Buddhist practice. Over centuries the precinct has accumulated religious structures and ritual traditions used by multiple communities.

The temple sits in the town of Kataragama in Uva Province in southeastern Sri Lanka, within a rural region that is a gateway to nearby national parks and pilgrim routes.

• Festival period: The annual festival season in mid-year draws large numbers of pilgrims; some traditional rituals include fire-walking and long processionals that concentrate around the temple precinct.

What to See#

• Main shrine complex: The central shrine area where the multi-faith devotion is focused, with separate spaces and rituals observed by Buddhist, Hindu and local devotees.
• Kiri Vehera stupa: A nearby Buddhist stupa dating to the early historic period that forms part of the wider sacred precinct and is visited by many pilgrims alongside the temple rituals.

• Aim for early morning or late evening to witness the pujas and rituals when the shrine is busiest but also most atmospheric; if you prefer fewer people, avoid the main festival period (the big annual Kataragama pilgrimages in the July-August season).
• Observe local customs on arrival - dress modestly, remove footwear before entering shrine areas, and follow the separate spaces used by different faith groups inside the complex.
• Include a short walk to the nearby Menik Ganga riverbank and the Kiri Vihara stupa for quieter sights nearby; these areas give context to the town's multi‑religious pilgrimage traditions and are less congested outside festival times.
