Building Medieval tower in Helsingborg, regional landmark
Kärnan is the medieval stone keep in Helsingborg, Skåne County; visitors climb the tower for city views and walk the adjacent ramparts to learn about the town’s medieval defenses.
Kärnan is a medieval stone keep in central Helsingborg, Skåne County, Sweden, and the surviving core of the town’s former castle. The tower is a prominent local landmark and symbol of Helsingborg.
The keep rises as a single masonry tower of roughly 35 metres in height and offers wide views across the Öresund strait toward Denmark. As the remaining part of a larger fortification, it is interpreted as the principal defensive and watch structure of the medieval castle.
The tower was constructed in the medieval period as part of fortifications that controlled the sound between Sweden and Denmark; the rest of the castle was largely demolished in later centuries while the tower survived. The structure underwent conservation and restoration work in the 19th century to preserve it as a historic monument.
Kärnan stands within the urban centre of Helsingborg, adjacent to the harbour and the town’s historic core in southern Sweden.
- Viewpoint: Climbing the tower provides panoramic views over the Öresund strait and the Danish coast across the roughly 4-kilometre-wide sound.
- Age: The surviving keep dates to the medieval period and represents the best-preserved remnant of the former Helsingborg fortress.
