Ven (Sweden) Island

Ven is a small Swedish island in the Öresund strait best known for its association with the astronomer Tycho Brahe and his late 16th-century observatories. The island has a rural character with low-rise villages and coastal harbours.

Cycling and walking are the primary ways visitors explore the island; distances between main sites are short and routes are mostly flat to gently rolling. Major highlights are the remains of Uraniborg and the museum that interprets Tycho Brahe’s astronomical work.

Tycho Brahe established his observatories on Ven in the 1570s and 1580s and carried out important astronomical observations there. The island later returned to ordinary agricultural and fishing use after his departure, while the observatory sites became archaeological and museum attractions.

Ven sits in the Öresund strait between the Swedish mainland and Denmark and is commonly reached by ferry from Landskrona. The island’s compact layout makes it accessible for day trips from nearby coastal towns.

Ven (Hven) is served by frequent car ferries from Landskrona on the Swedish mainland. Drive from Malmö to Landskrona via the E20 (approximately 40-50 km, about 30-40 minutes by car) and take the ferry from Landskrona harbour to Ven (journey time around 20-30 minutes depending on the service). On arrival at the island ferry landing the main villages and museums are a short walk or a few minutes by bike.

• Take the ferry from Landskrona (the most frequent connection) and aim for an early crossing on summer weekdays to beat the day-trip crowds; book bike rentals at the harbour on arrival if you plan to cycle the island.
• Start at Bäckviken harbour to pick up maps and bike routes - the island is compact and the quieter north shore and inland lanes are where many visitors find peaceful views that day-trippers miss.
• If you want Tycho Brahe history, plan time for the small museums and ruins (they're clustered, so combine them into a single loop) and avoid peak afternoon return ferries by reserving a later crossing if you prefer relaxed exploring.
