How to Get to Juayúa
Juayúa is reached most conveniently from San Salvador (SAL). Travelers usually use airport shuttles or taxis to San Salvador's bus terminals, then public buses or private shuttles to Sonsonate and a short onward ride to Juayúa.
Monseñor Óscar Arnulfo Romero International Airport (SAL): The main international airport for El Salvador, located east of San Salvador. From SAL to Juayúa you can take a shuttle or taxi to San Salvador and continue by bus/shuttle to Sonsonate and Juayúa; total travel time is typically 1.5-2.5 hours depending on traffic. Airport shuttles to Sonsonate/Juayúa run with varying prices (private shuttles commonly US$25-40 one-way).
Ilopango Airport (SAL/ILS): Ilopango handles limited flights and charters; it’s closer to San Salvador city but commercial options are limited for international travellers.
Train: El Salvador has no intercity passenger rail network.
Bus: Public buses connect San Salvador’s western bus terminals to Sonsonate; from Sonsonate there are local buses or pick-up shuttles to Juayúa. Typical public-bus fares within the country are inexpensive (under US$2 for intercity legs); expect the San Salvador→Sonsonate leg to take ~1-1.5 hours and Sonsonate→Juayúa another 30-50 minutes depending on stops.
How to Get Around Juayúa #
Juayúa is a small, walkable town; the central plaza, churches and food stalls are easily reached on foot. Buses and shuttle vans along the Ruta de las Flores connect Juayúa with nearby towns (Ataco, Apaneca) and Sonsonate; local taxis are also available for short trips. Buses and shuttles are inexpensive, but schedules vary - weekend services are busiest because of tourism, so plan accordingly.
