How to Get to Iganga
Iganga is reached primarily by road from Kampala/Entebbe; the closest major airport is Entebbe International Airport (EBB). There is no regular passenger rail service into Iganga, so buses and shared minibuses from Kampala or Jinja are the usual way in.
Entebbe International Airport (EBB): The main international gateway for Iganga is Entebbe International Airport near Kampala. From Entebbe you can take a private taxi or ride-hailing car to Kampala and then a bus or shared minibus (matatu) to Iganga; total travel time is typically 3-4 hours from the airport to Iganga by road. Taxis from Entebbe to Kampala cost roughly UGX 80,000-120,000 (one way) while the onward minibus from Kampala to Iganga is commonly in the range UGX 10,000-25,000 and takes about 2-3 hours from Kampala.
Jinja (road access): Jinja does not have regular commercial flights but is the nearest major road hub to Iganga. From Jinja town there are frequent minibuses and shared taxis to Iganga; travel time is about 30-45 minutes and fares are low (a few thousand UGX). If you fly into smaller private airstrips nearby you will still transfer by road through Jinja.
Train: Uganda currently has very limited passenger rail services; there is no regular intercity passenger train serving Iganga. Overland travel is therefore done by road.
Bus / Minibus: Regular public minibuses (matatus) and regional bus companies run from Kampala (New Taxi Park or Kampala Northern Bus Park) and from Jinja to Iganga. Journey time from Kampala is about 2.5-3.5 hours depending on traffic; typical fares on shared minibuses are roughly UGX 10,000-25,000. From nearby towns (Jinja, Kamuli) shorter trips are 30-90 minutes and much cheaper.
How to Get Around Iganga #
Iganga is compact enough to explore on foot around the town center, though surfaces and sidewalks can be uneven. The most common ways to get around are boda-boda (motorcycle taxis) for short hops and shared minibuses or taxis for longer trips to Jinja or Mbale. Fares are low by international standards: expect boda-boda rides of a few thousand Ugandan shillings within town and minibuses priced by distance. Carry small change, agree a boda fare before you ride, and be cautious after dark when services thin out.
