How to Get to Njeru
Njeru lies on the east bank of the Nile just next to Jinja, and most visitors arrive by road from Kampala or via Entebbe International Airport. Entebbe is the main international airport; from there you typically transfer by shuttle or taxi to Kampala and then take an intercity bus or minibus on to Jinja/Njeru.
Entebbe International Airport (EBB): Entebbe is the main international gateway for central and eastern Uganda. From Entebbe you can reach Njeru (near Jinja) by direct taxi/transfer, airport shuttle to Kampala and onward bus, or by hiring a private car. A private taxi or transfer from Entebbe to Njeru typically takes about 2.5-3.5 hours by road; expect fares in the region of 150,000-250,000 UGX for a single direct taxi (prices vary by operator). Alternatively, many travelers take a shuttle or taxi into Kampala (30-60 minutes, ~50,000-100,000 UGX) and then a bus or shared minibus from Kampala to Jinja/Njeru (see Bus below).
Train: Uganda currently has no regular, reliable passenger train service serving Njeru/Jinja; most rail lines in the country are used for freight and rehabilitation projects have been ongoing. For practical purposes, rail is not an option for getting into Njeru - use road services instead.
Bus: Regular intercity buses and shared minibuses (matatus/coasters) run between Kampala and Jinja, arriving at Jinja Bus Park or the Jinja town taxi park; many services continue on to stops in Njeru. Travel time from Kampala to Njeru is typically 1.5-3 hours depending on traffic and operator; fares commonly range around 8,000-15,000 UGX one-way. From Entebbe you can take a shuttle/taxi into Kampala and then catch a bus to Jinja, or look for direct coach services that stop at Jinja/Njeru from Entebbe (total journey 2.5-4 hours depending on connections).
How to Get Around Njeru
Njeru is best reached and navigated by road: intercity buses and shared minibuses link it to Kampala and Entebbe, while local mobility relies on boda-bodas and bajajs. For most visitors, a combination of an intercity bus or private transfer and short local boda-boda or bajaj rides works best for efficient travel.
- Intercity buses / minibuses (8,000-15,000 UGX) - Buses and shared minibuses are the main way to get to Njeru from Kampala and Entebbe. Services run from Kampala Central Bus Park (Old Taxi Park) to Jinja Bus Park and stop close to Njeru; journey time is usually 1.5-3 hours from Kampala. Buses are inexpensive, fairly frequent, and the most practical option for most travelers - keep an eye on departure points and negotiate seat baggage handling if needed.
- Shared taxis / coasters (8,000-20,000 UGX) - Shared taxis (coaster minibuses) leave when full and are a common faster alternative to scheduled buses. They depart from taxi parks in Kampala and drop passengers at taxi parks or marked stops in Jinja/Njeru. They can be quicker than larger buses but are less comfortable and sometimes crowding is an issue; expect variable departure schedules.
- Private taxi / car hire (40,000-250,000 UGX) - Hiring a private taxi or car is the fastest door-to-door option and gives flexibility to stop en route (for example at Mabira Forest or viewpoints along the Nile). A direct transfer from Kampala or Entebbe to Njeru takes roughly 1.5-3.5 hours depending on origin and traffic. Prices are significantly higher than bus fares and should be agreed in advance; request a breakdown of any tolls or waiting fees.
- Bajaj / Auto-rickshaw (tuk-tuk) (3,000-8,000 UGX) - Bajaj (three-wheeled tuk-tuks) operate around Jinja and Njeru for short trips and are cheaper than taxis for local journeys. They're good for short hops between markets, the Nile banks and neighborhoods but negotiate fares beforehand - many drivers don't use meters. Use them for quick errands or short rides when you want to avoid a motorcycle.
- Boda-boda (motorcycle taxi) (2,000-6,000 UGX) - Boda-bodas are the fastest way to get around locally, especially for short cross-river trips or navigating Njeru's side streets. Always insist on a helmet if available, agree the fare before you ride, and be cautious with valuables. They're inexpensive and widely available but offer minimal protection, so avoid in heavy rain or on busy highways.
- Walking - Njeru's central areas are compact enough to explore on foot for short distances-markets, riverside viewpoints and nearby hotels are often walkable. Walking is the best way to experience street life and visit close attractions, but use common-sense safety measures after dark and on busy roads.
