How to Get to Lugazi#
Lugazi, east of Kampala, is most easily reached by road from Entebbe or Kampala. Shared minibuses (matatus) are common and inexpensive; private taxis and shuttles are faster for door-to-door transfers.
Entebbe International Airport (EBB): Entebbe is Uganda’s main international airport and the most common arrival point for travellers bound for Lugazi. From Entebbe you can travel by road to Lugazi via Kampala-a typical journey is 1.5-3 hours depending on traffic and route.
Kampala (domestic options): There are no commercial airports closer than Entebbe for scheduled international arrivals.
Train: Uganda’s passenger rail services are limited and do not provide a reliable option for Lugazi; rail is not a practical choice.
Bus / matatu: Matatus (shared minibuses) and stage taxis run from Kampala to Lugazi frequently; expect travel times from Kampala of roughly 45-90 minutes depending on traffic and departure point. Buses depart from Kampala’s main stages into the eastern corridor.
How to Get Around Lugazi#
Road travel from Entebbe or Kampala is the practical route to Lugazi. Matatus are cheapest and frequent; private taxis or shuttles are faster and more comfortable for arrivals with luggage.
- Matatu (shared minibus) (2,000-5,000 UGX) - Matatus provide frequent, low-cost trips between Kampala and Lugazi. They depart from specific stages in Kampala and are economical for solo travellers-expect crowding during peak times and carry smaller change for fares.
- Private taxi / shuttle - Private taxis and airport shuttles offer faster, direct transfers from Entebbe or Kampala to Lugazi. They are more expensive than matatus but useful for groups, luggage, or early/late arrivals-book in advance when possible.
- Motorcycle taxi (boda boda) (500-2,000 UGX) - Boda bodas are common for short trips inside Lugazi and surrounding settlements-cheap and quick but riskier than four-wheel transport. Use helmets and agree price ahead of time; avoid long rides on boda bodas.
- Bicycle / boda alternatives - Cycling is used by locals for short distances and last-mile travel; rental options are informal. Use caution on main roads and avoid heavy-traffic times.
