House of Opium

The House of Opium is a museum in the Golden Triangle area of northern Thailand that interprets the history and impact of opium in Southeast Asia. It sits close to the river confluence that marks the border region of Thailand, Laos and Myanmar.

Exhibits explain opium cultivation, trade and social effects across the region using panels, photographs and multimedia displays; the site is commonly visited together with the nearby Golden Triangle viewpoint. The facility is located in Chiang Saen District beside the Mekong River, in the far north of Thailand near the borders with Laos and Myanmar, roughly an hour by road from the city of Chiang Rai depending on traffic.

This small, privately run and attractively laid-out museum documents the history of the opium trade that flourished in the infamous Golden Triangle, covering the basics of opium production and the dangers of addiction. A number of showcases are filled with the paraphernalia used for processing and smoking the drug; the scientific basis of opium and its effects are explained, as are the methods of growing poppies and extracting heroin from the opium paste.

Opium pipes, scales and weights, the tools once used for planting and harvesting the crop essential to this small border town’s economy, and many other vintage exhibits bring the region’s history to life, along with old polychrome photographs and maps of the opium plantations. The museum also displays artefacts and information about the Padaung, a local hill tribe heavily involved in the production and distribution of the drug until the Thai government intervened in the late 20th century.

Because of its location in Sop Ruak, right beside the Golden Triangle signboards, this museum draws far more visitors than the more elaborate Hall of Opium just a kilometre up the road.
