About Hall of Opium#

The Hall of Opium is a specialized museum and learning center in northern Thailand dedicated to the history, trade and social effects of opium in the Golden Triangle region.

The site was developed to document the Golden Triangle’s century-long association with opium production and to support public education about drug control and rehabilitation. It was built as a purpose-built museum and interpretive center focused on regional history and contemporary responses to narcotics.

The museum sits in the Golden Triangle area in Chiang Saen District, Chiang Rai Province, on the banks of the Mekong near the border with Laos and Myanmar, north of Chiang Rai city.

  • Focus and context: Located within the Golden Triangle complex, it presents the regional history of opium production and contemporary drug control efforts in museum form.
  • Exhibit style: Onsite displays combine artifacts with audiovisual exhibits to explain cultivation, trade routes and modern eradication and rehabilitation programs.

What to See#

  • Exhibition galleries: Permanent exhibition galleries that explain the history, cultivation, processing and social impact of opium in the Golden Triangle using displays, artifacts and audiovisual presentations.
  • Golden Triangle viewpoint: Outdoor viewpoints and grounds adjacent to the museum that look toward the Mekong River and the point where Thailand, Laos and Myanmar meet.

History & Culture of Hall of Opium#

Unlike the privately owned House of Opium at the epicentre of the Golden Triangle, this museum-constructed under the auspices of the Mae Fah Luang Foundation-is tucked away in a lush valley and uses modern technology to create a more interactive experience on the same subject. It provides a comprehensive view of opium production in the region, the worldwide effects of addiction and related crime, and the entire history of opium from its beginnings as a medicinal drug in Sumerian culture.

The range of exhibits is vast. Beginning with a poppy plantation set in a small valley and displays of the different varieties of opium poppy with their botanical detail, the history of opium use is traced across 5,000 years. The imperial era, when minor Western trade in the drug shifted to become the currency for the tea trade with China through the port of Canton, is covered extensively, as are the resulting Opium Wars.

Models of opium dens and smugglers’ hideouts, rooms covering both the physical and psychological effects of addiction, its relation to crime, the medicinal use of the drug, case studies of addicts and the control measures in place worldwide all lead to a Reflection Hall, where visitors can consider what they have seen.
