How to Get to Weligama

Weligama on Sri Lanka's south coast is reached most easily from Colombo Bandaranaike International Airport (CMB) or the closer Mattala Rajapaksa International Airport (HRI). The town is on the Coastal Railway Line (Weligama Railway Station) and is well served by intercity buses and local taxis/tuk‑tuks.

By Air

Bandaranaike International Airport (CMB): The main international gateway for Sri Lanka, about 150-170 km north of Weligama. From CMB you can take a private taxi or prebooked transfer to Weligama (about 3-3.5 hours) - expect roughly LKR 18,000-25,000 for a private car; the journey by road on the expressway is typically 3-4 hours by car or taxi.

Mattala Rajapaksa International Airport (HRI): A smaller domestic/international airport on the south-east coast, closer to Weligama. Taxi transfers from HRI to Weligama take around 45-60 minutes and cost roughly LKR 5,000-8,000 (prices vary with availability).

By Train & Bus

Train: Weligama has its own station, Weligama Railway Station, on Sri Lanka Railways’ Coastal Line (services run through Matara to Colombo). From Colombo Fort to Weligama is typically 2.5-3.5 hours depending on the service; fares depend on class - basic second-class tickets are inexpensive (low hundreds of LKR) while reserved observation/window seats cost more.

Bus: Regular intercity buses and private coaches run from Colombo (central bus stations and the Pettah area) to Matara/Weligama, taking about 3-4 hours. Ticket prices are generally LKR 200-600 depending on the service (local bus vs. private coach). Local tuk-tuks and taxis handle last-mile connections in town.

How to Get Around Weligama #

Weligama is compact and generally walkable along the bay and main streets; many visitors stroll between beaches, cafes and surf schools. Local transport options include tuk-tuks for short hops, local buses along the coastal road and the Sri Lanka Railways stop at Weligama station for connections to Galle and Colombo. Scooter rentals and hired tuk-tuks are common for exploring nearby spots; negotiate fares before you ride. Expect short tuk-tuk trips to cost modest amounts in local currency and trains/buses to be inexpensive by international standards.

Nightlife in Weligama #

Nightlife in Weligama is low-key and centered on beach bars, small pubs and surf-hostel hangouts; nights are more about relaxed drinks and music than a club scene. A few beachfront venues stay open late during high season, but options are limited compared with bigger coastal towns. If you need livelier nightlife, nearby Mirissa and Galle have more bars and evening entertainment within easy reach.
