Why Visit Couva? #
An industrial-meets-wetland region, Couva draws travelers who want birdwatching at the Caroni Bird Sanctuary alongside the gritty contrast of Point Lisas’ port and steelworks. How to Get to Couva
Couva is served via Trinidad's road network and by Piarco International Airport (POS) for international arrivals; Tobago's ANR Robinson (TAB) serves the sister island. Most visitors reach Couva by taxi, private transfer or maxi taxi from Piarco or Port of Spain.
Piarco International Airport (POS): The island’s main international gateway, Piarco is about 25-40 minutes from Couva by car. Taxi or private transfer is the most convenient option (typical taxi fares to central Trinidad towns are around TT$120-220; journey 25-40 minutes depending on traffic). PTSC buses and route taxis (maxi taxis) also operate between Piarco and nearby towns; travel time is similar but depends on stops.
A.N.R. Robinson International Airport (TAB): Located on Tobago, this airport serves flights to/from Trinidad and regional hubs. If you arrive in Tobago you’ll need the inter-island flight or ferry to reach Trinidad; a taxi from TAB to Scarborough takes about 15-25 minutes (short, local fares).
Train: There is no regular passenger rail service on Trinidad - travel is by road only.
Bus & Maxi Taxi: PTSC (public) buses and privately operated shared taxis called maxi taxis are the backbone of inter-town travel. From Couva you can catch maxi taxis or buses to Port of Spain, San Fernando and neighbouring towns; fares vary by route (typical short/intermediate trips roughly TT$10-40) and travel times depend on distance and traffic (Port of Spain ~30-45 minutes; San Fernando ~45-70 minutes).
How to Get Around Couva #
Couva is a compact town and fairly walkable around the center and market area. For longer trips you’ll rely on maxi-taxis (shared minibuses) and PTSC buses that link Couva with San Fernando and Port of Spain; regular taxi drivers also operate locally.
If you plan to explore nearby beaches or industrial areas a car is more convenient. Expect short taxi rides to be inexpensive by local standards; confirm fares before you go and allow extra time for trips during rush hour or events at the Brian Lara Stadium.
