Pitch Lake, at La Brea in southwestern Trinidad, is the world’s largest natural deposit of asphalt and a notable geological attraction. The area forms a broad, viscous surface of natural bitumen with observable seeps and occasional bubbling.

The lake presents an unusual landscape of tar, minor pools and occasional vegetation on its firmer margins; it has long been used as a commercial source of asphalt. Guided visits are commonly offered that explain the lake’s geology and allow controlled access to suitable areas.
