Colombia in May: Weather, Crowds & What to Expect

Caribbean Coast (Cartagena, Santa Marta, Barranquilla, Rosario Islands)

May brings a transition toward the wetter season; rain becomes more frequent across the coast with longer shower periods and higher humidity that lingers into the night. Boat crossings to the nearby islands can be choppier and small operators may cancel on windy afternoons. It’s quieter than high season, so hotels are cheaper, but prepare for afternoon storms that can interrupt beach days and city exploration.

Pacific Coast & Chocó (Nuquí, Bahía Solano, Quibdó)

May continues as one of the rainier months; boat travel can be choppy and river levels rise, changing access points to beaches and estuaries around Nuquí. This is a quieter time for tourism, so small eco-lodges offer lower rates but fewer services. Pack heavy-duty waterproofs and expect thick jungle humidity; whale season is approaching, and sightings increase in the coming weeks.

Andean Highlands (Bogotá, Medellín, Coffee Triangle, Cali)

May typically carries the peak of the first rainy season in many Andean areas, with persistent wet spells that make highland trekking - for example to Cocora Valley - greener but muckier. Bogotá’s skies are usually overcast with cool, damp afternoons that require a waterproof jacket. The coffee harvest cycles make finca activity variable; some farms offer wet-processing demonstrations during the wetter months.

Los Llanos (Eastern Plains)

May deepens the rains and the plains quickly flood, transforming savannahs into broad shallow wetlands popular with aquatic birdlife; small aircraft and boat transfers dominate travel. Many ranches limit vehicle access, and long-distance driving is discouraged. The landscape is dramatic and quiet - great for birders - but be ready for mosquitoes, emerging amphibians, and very muddy conditions.

Amazon Basin (Leticia, Puerto Nariño, Amacayacu)

May continues very wet conditions with swollen tributaries and abundant amphibian life; some overland trails are impassable and schedules are adjusted by lodges to favor river trips. The humidity is intense, and sunshine often appears only in short bursts between heavy showers. Expect primitive facilities in deeper reserves and plan for slower-paced travel.
