High / low are average daily temperatures (°C). “Feels” reflects how hot or cold it feels, allowing for humidity.
Caribbean Coast (Cartagena, Santa Marta, Barranquilla, Rosario Islands)
Trade winds and sun define January on the northern coast: Cartagena and Santa Marta enjoy strong, dry easterly breezes that cut the humidity a little, making wandering the old city and Tayrona Park pleasant. Barranquilla buzzes with post-Carnival energy if Carnival fell in February, but beaches are crowded. Pack light cottons, sun protection and expect warm evenings; boat services to the Rosario Islands run reliably in this month.
Pacific Coast & Chocó (Nuquí, Bahía Solano, Quibdó)
January still brings abundant rain to the Pacific coast, but this is one of the calmer months relative to the rest of the year; Bahía Solano and Nuquí have warm, very humid days and frequent cloud cover. Flights and small boats operate but be prepared for delays - local operators often schedule around weather windows. Pack lightweight waterproofs and expect jungle trails to be muddy if you explore inland.
Andean Highlands (Bogotá, Medellín, Coffee Triangle, Cali)
Cool, crisp mornings set the tone in January across Bogotá and the high plateau - the city’s altitude keeps daytime temperatures mild and nights chilly, so a warm layer is essential. Medellín feels much milder with springlike days and fewer showers, while the Coffee Triangle is pleasant and green after the minor December rains; great for finca visits. This month is busy with holiday travelers in urban centers; plan museum visits and city walks for cooler parts of the day.
Los Llanos (Eastern Plains)
A bright, dry spell often marks January across the Llanos: dusty tracks, low rivers, and excellent wildlife visibility around seasonal waterholes make it the prime month for safaris. Towns like Villavicencio serve as gateways for excursions to ranches (hatos) where riding and spotting capybaras and birds are easy. Expect hot daytime temperatures; pack sun protection, light clothing, and plenty of water.
Amazon Basin (Leticia, Puerto Nariño, Amacayacu)
The beginning of the year in the Colombian Amazon is very humid with frequent rain showers in Leticia and surrounding reserves; river levels are still high from the end-of-year rains. Jungle trails can be slick and mosquitoes abundant, but the waterways are excellent for canoe trips to spot pink river dolphins and flooded-forest wildlife. Pack waterproof covers for gear, long sleeves for insects, and schedule flexible days for river excursions.
