Caribbean Coast (Cartagena, Santa Marta, Barranquilla, Rosario Islands)

July continues the wetter pattern with heavy, localized downpours; Santa Marta’s access roads to Tayrona may become dusty then muddy depending on recent rains. The sea is generally calm for island hopping in early morning before winds pick up; nights remain warm and sticky. Crowds thin a bit compared to winter high season, giving better value on accommodations if you don’t mind an occasional shower.

Pacific Coast & Chocó (Nuquí, Bahía Solano, Quibdó)

July marks the start of Colombia’s Pacific humpback whale season for many operators - Nuquí and Bahía Solano host consistent sightings through October - even as heavy rains continue onshore. Boat tours focused on whales are the main attraction and are best taken early in the morning when seas are calmer. Roads remain limited, so expect flying or long boat rides to reach remote coastal villages.

Andean Highlands (Bogotá, Medellín, Coffee Triangle, Cali)

July is often the drier window in many Andean locations: Bogotá’s clearer skies and Medellín’s warm sunny days attract visitors, and this is a popular month for trekking in Los Nevados (weather permitting) and hiking around Salento. Mountain summits still require warm clothing, especially at dawn. Expect busier hotels and festival crowds in Medellín mid-month; reserve accommodations early.

Los Llanos (Eastern Plains)

July stays within the rainy season with broad flooding that pushes wildlife into river channels, concentrating sightings around higher ground - good for river safaris. Mosquitoes and humidity are high, so treated clothing and repellent are essential. Road access to many remote spots remains limited, so rely on local operators who are experienced with seasonal logistics.

Amazon Basin (Leticia, Puerto Nariño, Amacayacu)

July typically offers the clearest stretch for visiting the Colombian Amazon - river levels fall enough to reveal sandbanks and trails, improving walking options in reserves like Amacayacu. Wildlife viewing from shorelines improves as animals concentrate; this is one of the busier months for jungle lodges. Bring good boots for muddy trails and expect warm humid days with fewer, though still possible, afternoon storms.
