Siem Reap & Northwest (Angkor, Battambang)
By July the rainy season is well-established and downpours can be intense, with frequent cloud cover and temperatures typically in the high 20s to low 30s. Angkor temples can be slippery and muddy; guided walks and archaeological trails can become wet and shaded, which reduces dust but increases leeches and mosquitoes in wooded areas. Visitor numbers are lower, so if you don’t mind wet weather you’ll find quieter ruins and lower rates.
Tonle Sap & Central Plains (Phnom Penh, Tonle Sap Lake, Kampong Thom)
June marks the start of regular, heavy rain periods with long wet spells and high humidity; the Tonle Sap begins swelling as Mekong flows push back into the lake. Boat travel becomes more interesting - floating villages expand and fishermen move their stilt houses - but expect choppy river crossings and occasional service changes. Urban travel can be slowed by flash flooding in low parts of Phnom Penh, so allow extra time between appointments.
Southern Coast & Islands (Sihanoukville, Koh Rong, Koh Rong Samloem, Kep)
June is squarely in the wet season with frequent heavy tropical downpours and choppy seas that can disrupt ferries to islands like Koh Rong and Koh Toch. Diving visibility usually declines as runoff increases, though reef life remains active and beachside spas are quieter. If you are comfortable with wet-weather travel, you’ll find better deals and tranquil beaches between storms.
Cardamom Mountains & Southwest (Koh Kong, Cardamom range, Bokor, Botum Sakor)
June brings intense rainfall and the Cardamoms become very wet - many secondary roads are muddy or closed, making overland access slow. Rivers swell and rafting routes are exciting but potentially hazardous; aerial visibility for canopy tours is limited. For conservation-focused travelers, this is an interesting time for amphibian and bird activity, though services in small eco-lodges may be minimal.
Northeast Uplands (Ratanakiri, Mondulkiri - highlands, waterfalls, ethnic villages)
June stays within the rainy season, with frequent downpours and lush jungle undergrowth; trails get muddy and leeches appear in shaded forest paths. The Srepok River rises and boat safaris to spot wild elephants and gibbons can be thrilling but are weather-dependent. Expect fewer tourists, discounts on lodges, and challenging travel conditions to remote homestays.
