High / low are average daily temperatures (°C). “Feels” reflects how hot or cold it feels, allowing for humidity.
Siem Reap & Northwest (Angkor, Battambang)
Monsoon winds begin to strengthen in May and thunderstorms arrive with increasing regularity; days are hot and humid, ranging from high 20s to low 30s, and rain typically falls in heavy bursts. The landscape turns green and some smaller rural tracks start to break up, making cycling or scooter trips more slippery. Angkor is quieter than peak season and waterfalls outside town (like Phnom Kulen) start to gain flow, though visibility can be variable during storms.
Tonle Sap & Central Plains (Phnom Penh, Tonle Sap Lake, Kampong Thom)
April brings the year’s highest heat; Phnom Penh can feel oppressive in the afternoons with highs around 34-36°C, and Khmer New Year festivities make the city lively and noisy. Tonle Sap still sits low, and boats ply fishing channels early to beat the heat. Ensure you have frequent water and sun protection - heatstroke is a real risk for midday sightseeing and rural transfers can be hot and dusty.
Southern Coast & Islands (Sihanoukville, Koh Rong, Koh Rong Samloem, Kep)
April is the hottest month and the coast can feel stifling in the afternoon; Khmer New Year brings local travel to beaches, so islands fill with domestic holidaymakers. Sea conditions begin to turn restless later in the month; if you’re island-hopping expect busier ferry schedules and higher prices. Pack sunblock, light clothes, and an early-morning plan for snorkeling or diving to avoid the heat and crowds.
Cardamom Mountains & Southwest (Koh Kong, Cardamom range, Bokor, Botum Sakor)
April is hot and humid in the lowlands, and Bokor Hill Station can be foggy or overcast which makes hilltop views unpredictable. Road travel into remote areas gets dusty, and Khmer New Year sees locals using rivers for cooling off. Prepare for sudden, heavy showers toward month’s end which can quickly transform dirt tracks; a rain jacket and waterproof boots are useful.
Northeast Uplands (Ratanakiri, Mondulkiri - highlands, waterfalls, ethnic villages)
April is hot and fairly dry before the rains begin; New Year celebrations make provincial towns lively with water-play and dance. Bou Sra and nearby falls may be diminished compared with the wet season but treks across plateaus are easier without mud. Hydration and sun protection are critical here - days can feel surprisingly exposed on open ridgelines.
