Siem Reap & Northwest (Angkor, Battambang)

September is often the wettest month with persistent heavy rain and the floodwaters of Tonle Sap near their maximum; highways and river crossings can be affected and some dirt roads become impassable. Temple visits are quieter and dramatic floodplain scenery around the lake is spectacular for wildlife watching, though boat operators may adjust routes. Pack a sturdy rain jacket and waterproof your camera gear; many hotels are discounted.

Tonle Sap & Central Plains (Phnom Penh, Tonle Sap Lake, Kampong Thom)

August is typically very wet and often the Mekong is sending peak flows that keep the Tonle Sap expanded and noisy under stormy skies. Phnom Penh will have hot, wet days with intermittent lightning; riverside bars and restaurants can be subject to sudden closures during heavy storms. This month is best for those who don’t mind soggy conditions: birding and fishing villages are busiest and the scenery is intensely green.

Southern Coast & Islands (Sihanoukville, Koh Rong, Koh Rong Samloem, Kep)

August remains wet and is often one of the roughest months for sea travel; longtail boat services may be limited and snorkel visibility can be poor after heavy rains. Kep’s pepper farms are lush and less crowded, and the seafood market is an authentic experience without tourist lines. Carry insect repellent and waterproof footwear for muddy paths; plan extra travel time for road sections prone to pooling water.

Cardamom Mountains & Southwest (Koh Kong, Cardamom range, Bokor, Botum Sakor)

August is typically one of the wettest months in the Cardamoms: persistent rain, leeches on forest floors, and very muddy conditions on overland trails. Rivers are powerful and waterfalls spectacular but dangerous; avoid independent river crossings and heed local safety advice. This is a shoulder season for ecotourism - expect solitude but limited infrastructure and fewer scheduled activities.

Northeast Uplands (Ratanakiri, Mondulkiri - highlands, waterfalls, ethnic villages)

August is reliably wet and often one of the most water-rich months: swollen rivers, roaring falls, and very muddy jungle tracks are the norm. Some road sections become impassable and 4x4 transfers are common for reaching remote sites. For photographers the rainforest glows with saturated greens, but expect unpredictable transport and limited accommodation in the most remote areas.
