Cahal Pech
Archaeological Site Hilltop Maya site overlooking the Belize River valley
Perched above San Ignacio, Cahal Pech features small plazas and elite Maya residences from the Classic period; visitors often combine the site with local museums and guided tours.
Cahal Pech is an archaeological site and ancient Maya hilltop settlement immediately overlooking San Ignacio in Belize’s Cayo District. It contains temple mounds, residential platforms, and a collection of artifacts spanning early and classic periods.
The site offers a compact arrangement of plazas, temple mounds and residential platforms set on a wooded ridge above the town. Trails wind between the principal groups and lead to vantage points with views over San Ignacio. A small on-site display presents ceramics and finds recovered during excavations.
Cahal Pech was occupied from the Preclassic into the Classic period and functioned as an elite and residential centre within the western Maya lowlands. Archaeological work in the 20th and 21st centuries documented burial and architectural sequences that show long-term habitation and local elites.
Situated within the town limits of San Ignacio in the Cayo District, the site sits on a ridge overlooking the town and the Macal River valley, making it very accessible from local accommodations and services.
- Proximity: Located within walking distance of San Ignacio town centre, making it one of the most convenient archaeological sites to visit in the Cayo District.
What to See #
- Acropolis: A raised acropolis complex of temples and elite residences that overlooks the modern town of San Ignacio and contains many of the site's largest mounds.
- Central Plaza: Central open area surrounded by low platforms that would have supported houses and public structures, visible from the site's trails.
- Visitor Centre and Exhibits: Small on-site museum and visitor facilities with displays of ceramics and local finds recovered from excavations.
