Naranjo Archaeological Site

Naranjo is an archaeological site of the ancient Maya in the Petén Department of northern Guatemala, with principal occupation and monuments from the Classic period (roughly 3rd-9th centuries AD).

The site’s important architectural elements include pyramid-temples, a central acropolis, a ballcourt, and a significant set of carved stelae and hieroglyphic monuments that record local rulership and events. Many stone monuments and stairways preserve inscriptions and reliefs that attract researchers and visitors interested in Classic Maya epigraphy.

Naranjo was constructed and occupied by Maya polities during the Classic era and played an active role in regional political dynamics; its monuments document episodes of rulership, alliance, and conflict. The site experienced building phases across several centuries and was eventually abandoned in the post-Classic period.

It is located in the lowland rainforest of the Petén region of northern Guatemala, among other Classic Maya centres, and is accessed through regional roads and forest tracks from nearby towns in Petén.

• Ballcourt and plaza: A raised courtyard that functioned as a ballcourt and is flanked by architectural ranges and sculpted stone monuments.
• Stelae and hieroglyphic monuments: A concentration of carved stelae and hieroglyphic monuments that record dynastic events and calendrical dates from the Classic period.

El Naranjo (often listed simply as Naranjo or El Naranjo) is reached from Flores (Santa Elena) or the Tikal area by road. Expect a multi-hour drive on rural and sometimes unpaved Petén roads; hire a driver in Flores or book a guided tour that includes transport and the necessary permits. Local shuttle services and private taxis can be arranged in Flores; travel times vary with road and weather conditions.

• Arrive at first light to hear the jungle wake - animal calls are loudest before 8am.
• Hire a local guide in Flores or Tikal to arrange permits and transport; trail conditions are seasonal.
• Bring insect repellent and long sleeves-rainforest bites and leeches are real in the wet season.
• Most maps label it El Naranjo or Naranjo; confirm with drivers to avoid being dropped off at a different town.
