How to Get to Budva#
Budva is most conveniently reached via Tivat Airport (TIV) for short transfers; Podgorica (TGD) and Dubrovnik (DBV) are alternatives depending on schedules and season. Buses and private transfers are the standard ways to connect Budva with nearby airports and Montenegrin towns.
Tivat Airport (TIV): Tivat is the closest airport to Budva (roughly 20-30 km). From TIV you can take a taxi to Budva (typical fare €20-€35, 20-30 minutes) or use airport shuttles/mini-buses and local bus services that connect Tivat with Budva (journeys around 30-45 minutes depending on stops).
Podgorica Airport (TGD): Podgorica is larger and further inland (about 60-80 km to Budva). Regular shuttle buses and intercity buses run between Podgorica and Budva (journey c. 1.5-2 hours); taxis and private transfers are available but more expensive (often €60+). Dubrovnik Airport (DBV) across the Croatian border is also used seasonally - cross-border bus services and transfers take about 1.5-2.5 hours depending on border waits.
Train: There are no direct rail links to Budva; the Montenegrin rail network runs along the coast through Sutomore and Bar but does not serve Budva directly.
Bus: Budva has a central bus station (Autobuska stanica Budva) with frequent services to Tivat, Kotor, Podgorica, Bar and international routes (e.g., Dubrovnik). Local and regional buses are the main public transport; single-trip fares are inexpensive (generally a few euros) and journey durations vary from ~20-45 minutes for nearby towns up to 2 hours from Podgorica.
How to Get Around Budva#
Budva is best navigated on foot within the old town and beach area; for longer distances, regional buses and taxis are the normal choices. Tivat Airport is the quickest air gateway, with Podgorica and Dubrovnik as practical alternatives depending on flight options.
- Local bus (€1-€6) - Budva’s bus station connects the town with Kotor, Tivat, Podgorica and Dubrovnik. Buses are frequent in high season and cheap - an efficient option for short hops, though timetables vary seasonally. Expect buses to Tivat/Kotor to take 20-40 minutes.
- Taxi / Transfer (€15-€70) - Taxis and private transfers are widely used for airport pickups and transfers to hotels; they’re faster and more comfortable than buses, especially with luggage. Fixed-price transfers from Tivat are common; from Podgorica expect a longer, more expensive ride.
- Car hire (€30-€80 per day) - Renting a car gives freedom to explore the Bay of Kotor and coastal roads; parking in Budva is available but can be limited in the old town during summer. Watch for one-way streets and seasonal traffic jams.
- Ferry / Boat (seasonal excursions) (€10-€40 (typical excursion)) - While not a primary commuter option, boat excursions connect Budva with other coastal towns and islands in summer - useful for day trips and avoiding road traffic. Prices vary widely by operator and route.
- Walking - Budva’s Old Town and nearby beaches are compact and best explored on foot. Expect cobbled streets and pedestrian-only sections in the historic centre.
