Risan City
Coastal town in Bay of Kotor with Roman ruins
On the Bay of Kotor, Risan keeps low-profile Roman mosaics, an old waterfront and short ferry hops to Perast. Visitors linger for seaside promenades, seafood taverns and the slow study of ruined villas and layered history.
Why Visit Risan?#
Tucked into the Bay of Kotor, Risan attracts history buffs and sea lovers with its ancient Roman mosaics and coastal views. The archaeological site and small museum reveal the town’s classical past, while the harbor-front village offers fresh seafood and olive groves set against steep bay mountains. Short trips bring visitors to nearby Perast and Kotor for Venetian architecture and maritime traditions. Risan’s quieter pace and historical remains provide a contrast to the region’s more touristy ports.

How to Get to Risan#
Risan is best reached by flying into Tivat (closest) or Podgorica and continuing by coastal bus or taxi. Montenegro’s bus network is the practical public option-trains are not relevant for this coastal route.
Tivat Airport (TIV): The closest airport to Risan (about 25-35 km). From Tivat you can reach Risan by taxi in roughly 25-40 minutes for about €25-45; local bus services also run along the coast with fares around €2-5, taking ~30-45 minutes depending on stops.
Podgorica Airport (TGD): About 60-90 km away and useful for some international connections. Buses from Podgorica to Herceg Novi/Kotor pass near Risan and typically take 1.5-2.5 hours; fares are roughly €5-10. Taxis from Podgorica are more expensive (around €70-100).
Train: Montenegro’s rail network does not serve Risan directly; rail travel is limited and not the usual option for this coastal area.
Bus: Intercity and local buses are the primary public transport. Buses run between Kotor, Herceg Novi, Tivat and Risan with short travel times (20-45 minutes) and very low fares (typically €1-5). Seasonal schedules are busier in summer, and timetables should be checked in advance.
How to Get Around Risan#
Buses and taxis are the normal way to get to and around Risan; Tivat is the most convenient airport. For scenic flexibility, consider a rental car or seasonal boat services.
- Local bus (€1-5) - Local buses link Risan with Kotor, Tivat and Herceg Novi. Services are inexpensive (typically €1-5) and journey times are short-20-45 minutes depending on origin. In summer frequencies increase; in shoulder seasons check schedules in advance.
- Taxi (€25-100) - Taxis provide quick transfers from airports and neighbouring towns-useful for early/late arrivals or if buses don’t align. Expect Tivat→Risan fares around €25-45 and Podgorica→Risan fares substantially higher (often €70-100).
- Car rental (€40-90/day (car hire)) - A hire car is useful for exploring the Bay of Kotor and surrounding coast at your own pace. Roads are scenic but can be narrow in places; parking in Risan is generally straightforward. Fuel and parking costs apply.
- Boat / water taxi (€10-40 (varies)) - Boat services and water taxis operate seasonally along the Bay of Kotor and can provide a scenic way to reach coastal villages. Availability is seasonal and prices vary-expect to pay more than buses for direct waterfront access.
- Bicycle (€0-30/day) - Short local rides are possible in good weather, but the coastal road has some hills and busy sections. Electric bikes make sense for longer coastal exploration during summer.
- Walking - Risan’s waterfront and old‑town area are compact and easily explored on foot. Walking is the best way to enjoy the bay views and local restaurants.
Where to Stay in Risan#
Risan waterfront - €30-70/night
Small guesthouses and private rooms line the waterfront; limited budget inventory in summer so reserve ahead.
Old town / Bay - €70-140/night
Comfortable seaside pensions and family hotels; good base for exploring the Bay of Kotor with pleasant sea views.
Kotor / Tivat (nearby) - €150+/night
Risan lacks large luxury resorts. For high-end hotels, check Kotor and Tivat, a short drive away along the bay.
