How to Get to Tivat#
Tivat is served directly by Tivat Airport (TIV), making it one of the easiest Montenegrin towns to reach by air. The town itself is compact; public buses and taxis link it with neighbouring coastal towns and airports.
Tivat Airport (TIV): Tivat Airport sits right on the Bay of Kotor and is the nearest airport to Tivat town (just a few kilometres). Taxis from the airport to Tivat centre are typically short (5-15 minutes) and cost around €8-€20; some local buses and seasonal shuttles also serve Tivat and nearby Kotor.
Podgorica Airport (TGD): Podgorica is inland and about 80 km from Tivat; intercity buses and private transfers connect the two (journey ~1-1.5 hours). Dubrovnik (DBV) is a cross-border option in high season with shuttle buses or transfers to Tivat taking around 1-2 hours depending on border procedures.
Train: There is no rail line serving Tivat directly.
Bus: Tivat has a bus station with regular services to Kotor, Budva and Podgorica. Local minibuses and regional coaches are the typical public transport; trips to neighbouring towns usually take 15-45 minutes and cost a few euros.
How to Get Around Tivat#
Tivat is highly accessible thanks to its airport; once in town, walking covers the waterfront and old district, while buses, taxis and seasonal boats handle regional travel.
- Airport shuttle / Local bus (€1-€6) - Short shuttle buses and regular local buses link Tivat with Kotor, Budva and nearby resorts; they are inexpensive and useful for short hops. Timetables are seasonal, with more frequent services in summer.
- Taxi (€8-€25) - Taxis are plentiful and the fastest way to reach hotels and marinas from Tivat Airport; fares are short and reasonable given the airport’s proximity. Confirm approximate fare before travel if possible.
- Car hire (€30-€80 per day) - Car rental is available and useful to explore the Bay of Kotor and Montenegro’s coast; parking can be tight near marinas and in the old centre. Be prepared for narrow coastal roads and summer congestion.
- Boat / Ferry (seasonal) (€5-€30) - Boat services operate seasonally, linking Tivat with other towns and islands in the bay - a pleasant alternative to driving when available. Prices and schedules are seasonal and operator-dependent.
- Walking - Tivat’s waterfront, marina and old town are compact and easily walked - ideal for short sightseeing strolls without a vehicle.
