Exploring Berewa#

As travelers head up the coast away from Kuta and Seminyak, the tall buildings and bustle drift into the distance, replaced by largely untouched coastline. Only 10 to 15 miles from Kuta lies the gorgeous bay and village of Berewa, a traditional Balinese settlement.

Around the village, privately owned villas hide in the vegetation, submerged in lush greenery so they do not spoil the area’s natural beauty. The coast is a mixture of wide beaches and rocks that show how powerful the sea can be here. A few high-end hotels front the beach, each with its own ocean-view pool, and they commonly advise guests not to brave the water: the currents are strong and suited only to confident swimmers and hardcore surfers. The main draw of Berewa is its surfing, so you will usually find more people out on the waves than lounging on the sand.

Berewa: Getting There & Need to Know#

The easiest way to reach Berewa from Kuta is to hire a taxi, a journey of about 25 minutes. The roads can be chaotic and are not for the fainthearted. Public transport does not run directly into the village, so a walk or taxi completes the trip; alternatively, hire a car or motorbike and make the coastal journey under your own steam.
