Basilica del Santo Niño

The Basilica del Santo Niño in Cebu City is a Roman Catholic basilica and shrine founded in 1565; it houses the venerated Santo Niño image believed to date from 1521. It is one of the Philippines’ oldest and most important Catholic sites.

The complex includes the main church and an adjacent museum that displays centuries-old religious objects and documents related to the Santo Niño devotion. The plaza and bell tower outside the basilica serve as focal points during the annual Sinulog festival, which draws large numbers of pilgrims and visitors.

Spanish colonists established the church in 1565 to serve the newly founded settlement; the Santo Niño image has been continuously venerated since the early colonial period and the church was elevated to a minor basilica in 1965. The building seen today retains elements from colonial-era reconstructions and later repairs.

The basilica is located in downtown Cebu City, a short walk from Magellan’s Cross and other historic sites in the city center.
