About Baan Sao Nak
Baan Sao Nak lives up to its name of “house of many pillars”, with 116 square teak columns supporting the sturdy structure. It was built over 100 years ago, during the reign of King Rama V, by Mong Chan Ong Chandraviroj, and is designed in a mix of Thai and Burmese architectural styles.
Perhaps the most famous architectural site in Lampang, the house is one of the best private museums in Thailand. A tour of the interior takes in exotic antiques, hand-woven crafts, utensils, regional lacquerware and other belongings of the former owners, most recently Khunying Valai Leelanuj, granddaughter of Mr Chandraviroj. Outside stands a 135-year-old Sarapee tree, while the spacious grounds include a rice barn that is a fine example of northern Thai architecture, along with a garden and buggy.
As well as the many tourists who visit each year, the house hosts Lampang’s khantoke dinners and serves as a venue for weddings and other celebrations.
