The main hub of activity in Lampang is Thanon Talad Kao (aka Kad Kong Ta), often called the Walking Street because it is closed to vehicles on weekend evenings.
The street’s history stretches back to the 19th century, during the reign of Rama V, when Thai, Chinese, Burmese and British teak merchants built substantial homes near the banks of the Wang River. The houses amply display the architectural styles of the many ethnicities that lived together here; the road’s name simply means ‘Old Market Road’, a nod to its former role as a street of commerce. Many remnants of those different cultures are easily spotted as you stroll leisurely down the path.
The best time to visit is between 18:00 and 22:00 on Saturday or Sunday, when the bustling activity takes place. Plenty of stalls offer tasty (and cheap) food, a plethora of handmade crafts, antiques and souvenirs such as T-shirts and Lampang ceramics. Traditional musicians also perform on weekends, so even if you don’t spend a baht you can hear some authentic Thai music.
