Arjuno-Welirang

Mountain Twin stratovolcano complex dominating East Java skyline

Twin volcanoes east of Malang, Arjuno and Welirang offer jungle trails, crater fumaroles and sunrise hikes. Trekkers seek summit views, sulfur vents on Welirang and cool highland air outside Java’s coastal plains.

The Arjuno-Welirang complex is a pair of adjacent stratovolcanoes in East Java, Indonesia, located inland from the north coast of the island. The two peaks form a distinct massif frequently visited by hikers and local climbers.

Trails lead to high ridges and the craters of both volcanoes; the Welirang side is particularly notable for fumarolic areas and sulfur deposits that produce steam and a strong sulfur odor. The massif offers multi-day trekking routes and wide views over eastern Java on clear days.

Both mountains are volcanic in origin and have a history of fumarolic activity; Welirang in particular has long been noted for its sulfurous activity and local sulfur extraction in the past. The area is part of Java’s volcanic arc and has been monitored for activity by Indonesian geological agencies.

The complex lies in East Java province, inland from the north coast near the city of Malang and the surrounding highland regency areas. Access for climbs is usually from local trailheads used by Indonesian trekking groups and guides.

  • Sulfur vents: Welirang is notable for visible fumarolic activity and sulfurous vents that produce strong sulfur smells on parts of the upper slopes

What to See #

  • Mount Arjuno: the higher summit in the complex, commonly referred to as the Arjuno peak, forms a bulkier, more glaciated massif and is the traditional objective for longer alpine climbs
  • Mount Welirang: Mount Welirang, immediately adjacent to Arjuno, is known for active fumaroles and sulfur deposits on its upper slopes and the name Welirang literally refers to sulfur

Tips for Visiting Arjuno-Welirang #

  • Climb in the island's dry season (the months outside the heavy-monsoon period) and start very early-many hikers set off before dawn to reach ridge viewpoints for sunrise and to avoid afternoon mist and cloud build-up.
  • Arrange a local guide or join an organized climb if you're unfamiliar with the area; transport to mountain trailheads is limited and guides can handle route-finding and permits if needed.
  • Allow time for transport logistics from Malang or nearby towns and confirm trailhead access in advance; public transport does not routinely serve the high-elevation start points.

Best Time to Visit Arjuno-Welirang #

Arjuno-Welirang is best climbed in the dry season (roughly April-October) when trails are safer and views are clearer.

Dry season (best for trekking)
Apr-Oct · 10-25°C (base to mid-elevations)
Drier trails and clearer summit conditions make this the preferred period for climbing and trekking; temperatures fall with altitude so summit will be cooler.
Wet season
Nov-Mar · 15-30°C (base), often much cooler on slopes
Frequent heavy rain makes trails slippery and increases risk of landslides and reduced visibility; not ideal for safe trekking.
