Actun Tunichil Muknal (often abbreviated ATM) is a Maya ceremonial cave and archaeological site in Belize noted for in-situ skeletal remains and ceramic offerings. The cave contains calcified human bones, ritual ceramics and other artifacts left in place by ancient Maya rituals.
Access to the site is by guided tour only and involves a trek that includes river crossings and wading through cave passages to reach the main chambers. The most famous find is a calcified human skeleton nicknamed the “Crystal Maiden,” left in an exposed chamber where calcite has partly crystallized on the bones.
Archaeological evidence places ritual use of the cave in the Classic period of Maya civilization, when caves were important sacred places for offerings and ceremonial activity. The site has been documented and conserved by archaeologists, with visitor programs designed to minimize impact on remains and artifacts.
