Archaeological Site Maya archaeological site crowned by a large ceremonial plaza
Above the Mopan River in western Belize, Xunantunich’s El Castillo rises over the canopy; visitors cross by hand‑cranked ferry, climb the pyramid for murals and long views of the region.
Xunantunich is a Late Classic Maya ceremonial centre in the Cayo District of western Belize, located on a low ridge above the Mopan River. The site is known for its large central court complex and a principal pyramid that forms the skyline of the site.
The complex is dominated by a central plaza surrounded by temple-pyramids and elite structures. The principal pyramid, commonly called El Castillo, has a viewing platform used for sweeping views of the surrounding countryside and the nearby Guatemalan hills. Additional highlights include a ballcourt and several carved stelae and stucco fragments displayed in situ.
Xunantunich was built and occupied primarily during the Classic period of Maya civilization. It served as a regional ceremonial and administrative centre; archaeological work in the 20th century exposed its plazas, temples, and sculpted monuments. The site experienced construction phases and reoccupation over several centuries before being abandoned.
The site sits in western Belize’s Cayo District near the village of San Jose Succotz, across the Mopan River from the town of San Ignacio and close to the Guatemala border. Access is by road from San Ignacio followed by a short ferry crossing to the archaeological grounds.
- Access: Reached from San Ignacio by a short drive to San Jose Succotz and a hand-operated ferry across the Mopan River; the ferry crossing is a distinctive arrival experience.
- Viewing tip: Best panoramic views are from the top of the main pyramid; mornings are cooler and generally less crowded for climbing and photography.
What to See #
- Main Plaza: Central ceremonial plaza flanked by temple-pyramids and civic structures; accommodates the site's largest monuments and public rituals.
- El Castillo: Principal pyramid and the site's highest structure, capped by a viewing platform that affords wide views of the surrounding Cayo countryside and into neighbouring Guatemala.
- Ballcourt: Open rectangular court used for the Mesoamerican ballgame, situated near the main plaza and temple groups.
- Stelae and Stucco Fragments: Area with carved stelae and fragments of stucco reliefs recovered from architectural contexts around the plaza.
