Westminster Cathedral is the mother church of the Roman Catholic community in England and Wales, located in central London near Victoria. Designed by John Francis Bentley in a Byzantine-Revival style, the cathedral is noted for its striped red-brick exterior and richly veneered interior.

The building was constructed around the turn of the 20th century and serves as both a place of worship and a center for Catholic ceremonies and music. The interior contains extensive marble work, mosaics and a prominent high altar used for liturgical functions.

A square campanile beside the main building acts as a local landmark and provides views over the surrounding city. The cathedral is adjacent to major transport routes and is open to worshippers and visitors according to posted hours and tour arrangements.

Located on Victoria Street, the cathedral stands within the City of Westminster a short walk from Victoria and Westminster transport hubs.

From Victoria station the cathedral is a 10-15 minute walk northeast (turn off Victoria Street onto Francis Street). St James’s Park and Pimlico stations are also within walking distance. Several bus routes stop on Victoria Street and Ambrosden Avenue. The cathedral sits a short stroll from Westminster Abbey but is a quieter, more intimate building to explore than the tourist-packed Abbey.

• Enter through the main West Door and take a moment at the tiled floor by the nave - the scuffs there are real, left by generations of worshippers and choir boot marks.
• Visit after a weekday mass if possible: the cathedral is quiet afterward, and the sunlight through the eastern mosaics is most dramatic mid-morning.
• The lift to the campanile has a charge and limited capacity; book on arrival if the queue is long, or come late afternoon when tour groups have dispersed.
