About St James's Park#
St James’s Park is a central royal park in the City of Westminster in London, situated immediately to the southeast of Buckingham Palace and adjacent to Horse Guards Parade. It is one of the royal parks and has historic landscaping, a central lake and parkland paths.
The park contains a small island, waterfowl collections and planted borders; it provides direct pedestrian routes between Buckingham Palace, Whitehall and Westminster. The park is frequently used for short walks, civic photography and informal recreation by residents and tourists alike.
Historically the area was laid out as royal hunting grounds and later landscaped as a public park; it has been associated with royal palaces and state ceremonial routes. The park’s proximity to major government and royal sites makes it a focal point for visitors moving through central London.
Located between Buckingham Palace and The Mall on one side and Horse Guards and Horse Guards Parade on the other, St James’s Park is within easy walking distance of major London transport hubs including Victoria and Westminster stations.
- Pelicans: A long-standing group of city pelicans are kept on the park’s island and are a customary attraction, with the pelicans originally introduced in the 17th century.
- Views and ceremonies: Views from the Blue Bridge and the Mall toward Buckingham Palace are popular photo spots, especially at the hour of the daily changing of the guard during summer months.
How to Get to St James's Park#
St James’s Park sits in central London beside The Mall and Birdcage Walk. The easiest public-transit access is St James’s Park Underground station (District and Circle lines) - the park is a 1-2 minute walk from the station entrance; Westminster (Jubilee, Circle, District) and Victoria (Victoria, District, Circle, National Rail) stations are both within a 10-15 minute walk. By road it’s in the city centre off The Mall/Birdcage Walk; from London Heathrow it’s roughly a 24 km (about 15 mile) drive into central London.
Tips for Visiting St James's Park#
- Go early in the morning (before 9am) to enjoy quieter paths and more active birdlife around the lake; the St James's Park tube entrance (Circle/District line) puts you on the park's southeast side for the shortest route in.
- For the classic vista, head to the Blue Bridge that spans the lake-the viewpoint frames Buckingham Palace, the lake and Westminster in one shot and is often missed by visitors who stay near The Mall.
- Avoid midday crowds by entering from Horse Guards Road or Birdcage Walk rather than the Buckingham Palace end; those side entrances give quicker access to quieter lawns and lakeside benches.
Best Time to Visit St James's Park#
Best visited in spring or early summer for mild weather, blooming gardens and lively park activity while avoiding the peak mid-summer tourist crowds.
