West Mebon is an island temple located at the center of the West Baray reservoir in the Angkor area near Siem Reap, Cambodia. The site dates to the Angkorian period and occupies an artificial island in the middle of the baray.
Architectural remains include a central sanctuary and platformed terraces that reflect the Khmer temple layout adapted to an island setting. Sculptural fragments and stonework survive on the island, and the site’s placement in the baray underscores its ceremonial and symbolic role.
The temple was built during the Angkorian era to serve religious and possibly royal ceremonial functions connected to the surrounding reservoir. Over time the structure has been subject to collapse, sedimentation and conservation efforts that reflect changing water management in the Angkor region.

Access is via the internal Angkor roads rather than a separate highway.

- Plan to visit West Mebon at low water or late afternoon: when water levels drop the island temple is much easier to reach and the sunset views are particularly dramatic.
- If the temple is surrounded by water, view it from the West Baray embankment rather than attempting an improvised crossing; combine the stop with the nearby Angkor Thom circuit to make the trip efficient.
