West Baray
Archaeological Site Enormous ancient reservoir serving Angkor's water system
The West Baray is a large Angkor-era reservoir west of Angkor Thom. Photographers and history visitors come for sunrise reflections, its water-engineering scale and proximity to temple sites such as West Mebon.
The West Baray is a large rectangular artificial reservoir at the Angkor archaeological landscape near Siem Reap, Cambodia, built during the Angkorian period. It is one of the major barays that provided water storage and hydraulic regulation for the Khmer capital.
The reservoir’s long earthen embankments and broad open water surface are the principal features; the site includes causeways and remains of peripheral temple structures. At the center of the reservoir lies an island temple complex that served religious functions linked to the baray.
The West Baray was constructed in the Angkorian era as part of the region’s engineered water management system and was used for irrigation, storage and symbolic purposes connected to temple layout. Its scale reflects extensive planning and labor investment by Angkorian authorities.
Located west of the main Angkor temple groups near Siem Reap, the baray occupies flat land adjacent to Angkor Thom and other major complexes. It is visible from surrounding embankments and roads and is commonly included on circuits of the greater Angkor area.
- Angkor water system: The reservoir is one of the largest man-made water bodies at Angkor and was integral to the Khmer water management system serving nearby temples and agriculture.
- Viewing point: Best viewed from the western embankment where the extent of the rectangular reservoir and its long causeways are most apparent.
What to See #
- West Mebon: An 11th-century island temple located near the center of the reservoir, originally serving religious and ceremonial functions and visible when water levels are low or by boat when filled.
How to Get to West Baray #
West Baray is the large western reservoir inside the Angkor Archaeological Park near Angkor Thom, west of Siem Reap town. Cyclists should expect a 20-60 minute ride depending on start point and fitness.
Tips for Visiting West Baray #
- Time your visit for late afternoon/sunset when the baray's water can mirror the sky and light makes for strong photographs; crowds are thinner than at the main Angkor temples.
- Approach the reservoir via the road to West Mebon and the embankment-this gives you the best viewpoints for the vast water surface and the island temple.
- Allow extra time to walk sections of the embankment and observe local fishing activity and birdlife-these quieter scenes are often missed by visitors focused only on the big temples.
