Senegal & The Gambia (Dakar, Saint‑Louis, Casamance & Banjul)
June marks the start of the true wet season in Casamance and the southern strips of Senegal and The Gambia, with heavy afternoon and overnight downpours becoming routine and mangrove channels rising. Dakar is often still pleasantly warm with occasional showers but not the deluges of the south. Travel in Ziguinchor and nearby islands becomes more complicated - boats and dirt tracks can be unreliable; waterproof boots and mosquito protection are musts.
Upper Guinea / Monsoon Coast (Guinea‑Bissau, Guinea, Sierra Leone & Liberia)
June deepens the monsoon: Conakry, Bissau, Freetown and Monrovia receive intense, often daily rains; lowland settlements and coastal highways can flood and ferries run irregularly. Cities are hot and humid between storms and power interruptions are not unusual. Photography and wildlife viewing are rewarding as forests come alive, but plan flexible itineraries and waterproof packing for gear and documents.
Gulf of Guinea (Côte d’Ivoire, Ghana, Togo & Benin)
June intensifies the wet period: sustained rain, high humidity and swollen city drainage systems are common - Lagos (to the east), Abidjan and Accra all experience heavier showers and occasional flash flooding. Agricultural landscapes are lush and cocoa harvest activity peaks inland. Plan longer transfer times between cities and pick accommodations with reliable power and water protection.
Nigeria (Coastal south, Lagos, Niger Delta & Jos Plateau)
June brings the core of the wet season to the south with frequent heavy showers and persistent humidity; coastal roads and streets in Lagos often have standing water after storms. The north remains much drier for now but will heat up toward the end of the month. Expect domestic flight delays during peak rains, and fit a good umbrella and quick‑dry clothing.
The Sahel & Inland Plains (Mauritania, Mali, Burkina Faso, Niger & northern Senegal)
June sees the monsoon move northwards - sudden, sometimes violent rains begin in parts of southern Mali, Burkina Faso and Niger, swelling river crossings and washing out tracks. Many interior rural routes become impassable and campsites flood; however, the countryside turns green and migratory birds arrive. If you travel, prioritize paved routes and keep contingency days for delays.
