Senegal & The Gambia (Dakar, Saint‑Louis, Casamance & Banjul)

Dry, dusty harmattan air governs much of January across Dakar and Saint‑Louis, bringing cooler mornings and long, sunny days - daytime highs are pleasant and the coast is comfortable for walking and beach days. Banjul and the main towns in The Gambia enjoy clear skies but expect gritty haze and reduced visibility on some mornings; pack a light windproof and a dust mask if you’re sensitive. This is high season for birdwatching along the Saloum and for comfortable city sightseeing.

Upper Guinea / Monsoon Coast (Guinea‑Bissau, Guinea, Sierra Leone & Liberia)

January brings clear, relatively dry weather to Conakry, Bissau and Freetown after the heavy rains have ended; mornings are comfortable and afternoons warm but not oppressive. The highlands of Guinea (Fouta Djallon) are pleasantly cool for trekking, with dusty trails washed clean and fewer biting insects. This is prime season for coastal exploration and boat travel in the Bijagós and Sherbro estuaries - bring layered clothing for cooler nights.

Gulf of Guinea (Côte d’Ivoire, Ghana, Togo & Benin)

Cooler mornings and the tail end of the dry season make January an excellent month for visiting Accra and Abidjan - skies are mostly clear, humidity is low and beaches are popular. This is prime time for city sight‑seeing and regional festivals; pack light breathable clothing and a sweater for coastal evenings. Inland attractions like Kpalimé or Bandama Valley are dry and accessible.

Nigeria (Coastal south, Lagos, Niger Delta & Jos Plateau)

January’s dry, breezy conditions make Lagos and the southern coast pleasant for city life and beaches - mornings can be hazy with harmonic dust but days are warm. Southern Nigeria enjoys its best travel weather now; the Jos Plateau and higher ground feel noticeably cooler and are excellent for outdoor activity. Pack sun protection and a light jacket for higher elevations.

The Sahel & Inland Plains (Mauritania, Mali, Burkina Faso, Niger & northern Senegal)

January features cool, dry mornings and the frequent harmattan haze across much of the Sahel - Timbuktu, Bamako and Ouagadougou have pleasant daytime sun and crisp evenings, ideal for overland travel. Desert camps and excursions are comfortable but bring layers: nights can be chilly. This is prime season for cultural festivals and for crossing desert routes safely.
