Set in extensive grounds beside the main road through town, Wat Sri Khom Kham is over 500 years old, though the current buildings are all quite recent.
The great Buddha. The main draw for Thai visitors is the enormous seated Buddha image, Phra Jao Ton Luang, some 18 metres high and almost as wide. Gleaming gold, it is thought to be the largest Chiang Saen-era Buddha image in the country.
The Garden of Hell. More striking for foreign visitors is the sculpture garden tucked into one corner of the grounds. Many temples paint an imaginary Buddhist hell in murals, but few render it in sculpture as here, with figures impaled on cactus-like plants, boiling in pots, and one poor soul with his tongue hanging to his waist and maggots crawling from his eyes: enough to encourage good behaviour.
