History & Culture of Wat Phra Taen Sila At#
Located in spacious grounds at the junction of Highways 102 and 1041, about 7km southwest of Uttaradit, Wat Phra Taen Sila-At is a popular destination for Thai merit-makers, and there is also a school on the grounds.
The temple’s most precious possession is a laterite sermon platform thought to date from the Sukhothai era, though such an obscure object is unlikely to excite most Western visitors. However, the interior walls of the viharn are covered with strikingly detailed and realistic murals depicting various aspects of Thai culture, and nearby is a local ‘museum’, which in reality is more of a painter’s workshop, where some of these detailed images are on sale.
