History & Culture of the Vietnam-Cambodia Friendship Monument

After the Vietnamese overthrew the Khmer Rouge in Phnom Penh and later ceded the city to the United Nations, the ruling communist party erected this Soviet-style memorial statue to commemorate the event. Some residual resentment about the historical relationship remains among Cambodians.

The monument stands in a public park that is very popular with Phnom Penh residents. In the evenings, couples sit on the benches to watch a column of fountains lit in colour and set to recorded music, while group aerobics and badminton are favourite activities before sunset; holidays often bring a stage with live performances.

How to Get to Vietnam-Cambodia Friendship Monument

The Vietnam-Cambodia Friendship Monument sits on the riverside in central Phnom Penh along Sisowath Quay near the Royal Palace riverfront. It is within easy walking distance of the Royal Palace / riverfront area and the National Museum; from the riverside stretch most visitors reach it on foot.

Techo International Airport (KTI) is about 25 km south of the centre, usually 45 minutes to over an hour by car, depending on traffic. Within the city, the usual way to reach the monument is by tuk‑tuk, taxi or city bus to Sisowath Quay.
