Central Market

The Central Market (Phsar Thmey) is an art-deco, enclosed market building in central Phnom Penh, Cambodia, noted for its large central dome and cruciform plan. It was built in 1937 and remains one of the city’s main market buildings.

The market’s layout features a central dome with four radiating covered arms that contain hundreds of stalls and small shops. Stalls sell a wide range of goods including clothing, electronics, jewelry, household items and fresh food, making it a practical place for shopping and souvenirs.

The market was constructed during the French colonial period and has been a continuous commercial hub since the mid 20th century, surviving periods of conflict and later restoration work. Its architecture is a prominent example of Phnom Penh’s colonial-era urban fabric.
