Independence Monument Monument

Independence Monument stands tall in the centre of a roundabout at the junction of Norodom and Sihanouk Boulevards, in the heart of Phnom Penh. It was built to commemorate Cambodia’s independence from French rule in 1953 and to honour those killed in war.

The lotus-shaped stupa is best seen just before dusk, when shadows enhance its intricate designs and the dark red tower appears to emit a warm orange glow. Standing at a busy central intersection, it is easily reached by cyclo, tuk-tuk or motodop taxi. The interior is closed to the public.

An Angkorian design. Completed on 9 November 1958, the monument was designed by the renowned Cambodian architect Vann Molyvann and honours the stylistic traditions of Angkor, particularly the temple of Banteay Srei. The dark red tower has five levels, each adorned with representations of the naga, the mystical serpent.

A national focal point. The monument is the focal point of national celebrations, especially Independence Day on 9 November, when a royal or high official lights a ceremonial flame here. It also serves as a memorial to those who died for the country’s freedom, and wreaths are often arranged on its steps during national events. Throughout the rest of the year the site is a quiet meeting place for locals and a draw for visitors.
