Vientiane Province Travel Guide

Located in the northwest region of Laos, Vientiane Province was separated from the smaller Vientiane Prefecture to the south in 1989. Home to the beautiful Vang Vieng district which is set against the backdrop of limestone mountains, the province is an excellent pit stop when traveling between Vientiane and Luang Prabang.

The Nam Ngum reservoir is quite popular among visitors to Vientiane Province, as boating and picnic excursions are possible in this area. The Keo-Oudom district is along the reservoir, and tourists can experience dining at the famous floating restaurants. The Thoulakhom Zoo, Nong Nok (Bird Lake), and Vangxang cave are a few other popular tourist destinations around the province.

Daily international flights fly into Vientiane’s Wattay Airport from Thailand, Cambodia and Vietnam. Buses and boat rides from surrounding prefectures such as Khammouane and Xaignabouli are available as well.
