How to Get to Vecrīga#

Vecrīga refers to Riga’s Old Town and is reached via Riga International Airport (RIX) or Riga Central Station. The historical centre is compact and best navigated on foot after arriving at the city transport hubs.

By Air

Riga International Airport (RIX): Riga’s airport is the primary gateway for Vecrīga (the Old Town of Riga). From RIX the bus No. 22 or the airport express (47) and taxis can reach central Riga in about 15-25 minutes; bus fares are about €1.50-€2, taxis usually €10-€20 to the city centre.

Liepāja/Tukums / Tallinn (alternatives): For international travelers there are fewer direct options - Tallinn is a much longer drive; mention is mainly for completeness. Riga Airport is the practical choice for visiting Vecrīga.

By Train & Bus

Train: Riga Central Station (Riga Central) is the main rail hub for Latvia with intercity and regional services. From Riga Central it’s a 10-20 minute walk or short bus/taxi ride to Vecrīga (Old Town).

Bus: Municipal buses, trams and trolleybuses serve central Riga; single fares on Rīgas Satiksme are €1.20 (contactless/app prices may differ). Buses and trams connect the rail station and airport area to the Old Town quickly.

How to Get Around Vecrīga#

For visitors the simplest approach is to arrive at RIX or Riga Central and then walk the Old Town. Use public transport for longer trips; Bolt is handy for quick door-to-door rides.

  • Rīgas Satiksme buses & trams (€1.20) - Rīga’s public transport network (buses, trams, trolleybuses) is the cheapest way to move around beyond the Old Town. Single fares are around €1.20 using card/contactless or app; buy tickets in advance or validate on board.
  • Train (Latvian Railways) (€2-€15) - Riga Central Station handles intercity and regional trains across Latvia. It’s an easy starting point for day trips and is within walking distance of Vecrīga; regional services are inexpensive but schedules are less frequent on weekends.
  • Taxi / Rideshare (€5-€20) - Taxis and rideshares (Bolt) are widely available and convenient for luggage or late arrivals. Bolt fares are typically lower than traditional taxis; expect short central trips to cost around €5-€12.
  • Bicycle / E‑scooter ( ) - Bike lanes and shared e-scooters are common in central Riga and useful for short hops around the city. Use official apps and park responsibly to avoid fines.
  • Walking - Vecrīga is best explored on foot; cobbled streets and compact layout make walking the primary way to see churches, museums and squares. Wear comfortable shoes for uneven surfaces.
