Lucavsala Island

Lucavsala is a river island and public park on the Daugava River within the Riga municipality in Latvia. It functions primarily as a municipal recreation area with parkland and event spaces.

The island features open lawns, beaches and sports areas used for picnics, cycling and seasonal festivals; organisers stage concerts and large public events on its plains during summer. Facilities are basic and access is by bridge and road connections from mainland Riga.

Historically the island has been used for leisure and city events rather than permanent settlement, and it has been developed by the city as an urban green space over recent decades. Planning and use have changed periodically with Riga’s recreational policies.

Lucavsala lies in the Daugava just inside Riga’s urban area, a short drive from central Riga and integrated into the city’s park network along the river.

• Walk or cycle onto the island from Riga's Plavnieku or Stone Bridge side rather than driving - the pedestrian routes are quicker and more pleasant.
• Weekend afternoons are when locals picnic and play football; arrive early on a Saturday to claim a riverside bench.
• Bring a light windbreaker - the Daugava churns up a breeze even on sunny days and mosquitoes can appear at dusk.
