How to Get to Valmiera

Valmiera is best reached from Riga - Riga International Airport (RIX) is the nearest major airport and Riga is the rail/bus hub for northern Latvia. There is no direct rail link into Valmiera; intercity coaches from Riga and other Latvian towns are the most practical public transport option.

By Air

Riga International Airport (RIX): The main gateway for Valmiera. From RIX take the airport shuttle or bus into Riga city (about 25-40 minutes) and then change at Rīgas starptautiskā autoosta (Riga International Coach Station) for an intercity coach to Valmiera. Intercity coaches from Riga to Valmiera take roughly 1.5-2 hours and typically cost in the region of €5-€8. A private transfer or taxi directly from the airport to Valmiera is possible (approx. 1 hr 40 min) but considerably more expensive (around €70-€120 depending on provider).

By Train & Bus

Train: Valmiera does not have regular national passenger rail service. There is no direct Pasažieru vilciens connection to the town, so trains are not a practical way to reach Valmiera.

Bus: Intercity buses are the standard way to reach Valmiera. Services depart from Rīgas starptautiskā autoosta (Riga Coach Station) and from other Latvian towns to Valmiera Bus Station (Valmieras autobusu stacija). Journey times from Riga are about 1.5-2 hours; expect fares around €5-€8 depending on operator and booking time.
